We tried every local AI app we could find. Most are a chat window: at best they paste a plain text file into a small context window. None could do what ChatGPT and Claude do with your files. Hob reads and edits your files and folders, looks at images, runs code in a sandbox, draws charts, and fills in PDFs, all on your computer. Many other apps also use hosted models by default, which isn’t private, or steer you toward a paid plan. Hob runs every model on your computer, and the whole app is free and open source (MIT), with nothing to upgrade to.
Hob runs on Apple Silicon Macs, Windows PCs, and Linux, with at least 8 GB of memory (RAM). More memory lets Hob run a smarter model: 16 GB is good for everyday tasks, and 32 GB or more gets you the best ones. Hob picks the best model your computer can run for you. Keep 10 to 25 GB of disk space free for Hob and its models, or about 75 GB for the largest model.
Click More info, then Run anyway. Windows shows this for new apps that aren’t yet signed with a Microsoft certificate. Hob is open source, so anyone can check what it does.
On a powerful computer, close to it. With 32 GB of memory or more, Hob runs the same kind of open models the big AI labs build, and for everyday work like writing, summaries, spreadsheets, and research it feels much like ChatGPT or Claude. On smaller computers, Hob uses a lighter model that’s great for quick tasks. Either way, you can chat, create documents, analyze data, run code, and work with connected tools, all without sending your files anywhere.
Hob comes in 32 languages and starts in your computer’s language; you can change it in Settings, under General. Write to Hob in any language and it answers in the same one. The full list: English, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
Your model runs locally, and your chats and files are stored on your computer. Hob has no telemetry. Web tools and connectors send the information needed for their actions to external services; those services have their own privacy policies. You choose which connectors to add.
Yes. Web search is the only online feature built into Hob, and you can turn it off in Settings, under Privacy, with Web access. Then Hob works fully offline, apart from downloading its models and updates. Connectors you add yourself go online only when you use them.
You need a connection to download Hob and its model, install updates, and use web tools or connected services. Some tasks may also need to download software packages. Chat and work with files already on your computer can run offline.
No account, no subscription. Hob and its models are free. Optional external services you choose to connect may have their own fees.
